FIRST 24 HOURS IN KOREA

Land with a plan.
Move like a local.

The practical setup for an independent Korea trip: internet, Korean addresses, airport transport, payment, local apps and a fallback when the final bus does not work.

Build the first connection ↓

THE FIRST 60 MINUTES

Do these in order.

Small setup decisions at the airport remove most of the friction later.

  1. 00–10MIN
    Connect before moving

Join airport Wi-Fi or activate your SIM/eSIM. Do not leave the terminal until your map and translation app can load.

  2. 10–20MIN
    Save the Korean address

Copy your accommodation name, full Korean address and nearest station exit. Keep an offline screenshot.

  3. 20–35MIN
    Set up local movement

Prepare NAVER Map and Papago. Buy or reload a transit card only after you know which first ride you are taking.

  4. 35–60MIN
    Confirm the final 800 metres

Check the station exit, bus stop or designated taxi stand closest to the accommodation—not just the city-centre arrival point.

ARRIVAL DECISION TOOL

Choose the first ride,
not the whole trip.

This is a planning recommendation, not a live timetable. Confirm service on your travel date.

START HERE

Compare the AREX Express and All-Stop Train.

Both reach Seoul Station. The Express is nonstop; the All-Stop train serves intermediate stations. Choose by departure time and your exact onward transfer.

Fallback

If the rail service no longer fits your arrival, check the official late-night transport page or the designated taxi stand.

MINIMUM SETUP

Carry three kinds
of backup.

01CONNECTION

Data + offline proof

Use a SIM/eSIM or roaming plan, but also screenshot your accommodation, first route and return ticket. A working phone should not be your only copy.

02PAYMENT

Card + some KRW

Keep an international payment card and a modest amount of Korean won. Transit-card reload and small local transactions may not accept the same payment method.

03MOVEMENT

Transit + taxi fallback

Use public transport as the main plan. Save k.ride and the Korean pickup point for the moments when a local bus interval breaks the route.

CASH IS NOT A BOARDING PLAN

Set up a transit card
before your first city bus.

Many Seoul buses and all Incheon city buses operate without cash boxes. If you board without a card, a driver may direct you to a bank-transfer payment method—a local fallback that is difficult or impossible for many visitors. Treat buses across the Seoul metropolitan area as transit-card first.

01
BUY

Get a Tmoney card

Buy a standard card at a convenience store such as CU, GS25 or 7-ELEVEN, or at a participating subway information centre. The blank card and the travel balance are separate costs.

02
LOAD

Add travel balance

Ask the convenience-store cashier to load Korean won, or use a multilingual machine inside a subway station. Some newer Seoul machines accept international cards, but keep some KRW because acceptance is not identical at every machine or store.

03
BUS

Tap on and tap off

Touch the same card to the reader when boarding and again before getting off. The exit tap is important for distance fares and transfers. Use one card per traveler.

04
SUBWAY

Tap in and tap out

Use the card at both fare gates. Without a transit card, buy a single-journey ticket before entering. A subway single-journey ticket cannot be used on a bus.

AIRPORT LIMOUSINE ≠ CITY BUS

Find the ticket counter
before the bus platform.

Do not assume that tapping Tmoney will issue the correct airport-bus ticket. At Incheon Airport, confirm the route and buy the required ticket at the official booth or terminal before walking to the stop. Payment and boarding rules can differ by operator.

TERMINAL 1Arrival level · 1F

Ticket booths are available inside near exits 4 and 9 and outside near designated exits.

TERMINAL 2Transportation Center · B1

Bus information and ticket purchase are available in the basement bus terminal.
