KOREA BUS FIELD MANUAL
How to Take Buses
in Korea
Local buses, intercity coaches and airport limousines do not use one payment rule. Identify the bus type first, then protect the return before you board.
3-SECOND START
Know which bus you are taking.
Tap on and off. Do not assume cash is accepted.
Check TmoneyGO or Bustago and confirm the exact terminal.
Use Kobus or TmoneyGO; the QR or issued ticket is the boarding proof.
From Incheon Airport to Seoul, buy the required ticket at the counter or machine.
CASHLESS DOES NOT MEAN BANK CARD
Carry a transport card before boarding.
Seoul publishes an official list of cashless routes. A foreign contactless credit card is not yet a universal substitute for tapping onto every city bus. A physical Tmoney or compatible transit card remains the safest default.
Tmoney cards are sold at major convenience stores and subway stations. Load enough for the return; a subway single-journey ticket cannot be used on a bus.

Six actions that prevent most mistakes
- 01
Save the exact stop in both directions
Use NAVER Map or KakaoMap and save the outbound stop and the return stop separately. Identical stop names can appear on opposite sides of a road.
- 02
Check the gap after the next bus
Do not stop at “arrives in 7 minutes.” Check how long the following bus takes. Missing one rural bus can change the whole day.
- 03
Tap when boarding
Listen for the approval sound and check the reader. If one card is paying for several people, tell the driver the group size before tapping.
- 04
Prepare two stops early
Follow both the app position and the onboard announcement, then press the stop button. Ask a short route question just after boarding while the bus is stopped.
- 05
Tap again when leaving
The exit tap closes distance-based fares and transfers. Missing it can affect a transfer discount or a later fare.
- 06
Save the return before sightseeing
As soon as you arrive, screenshot the station-bound stop, the last comfortable bus and the point where you would switch to a taxi.
RETURN-FIRST RULE
The last bus is not your target.
For a car-free day trip, save the final bus that still leaves one later service as backup. In rural areas, confirm the timetable at the stop or operator because live map predictions can disappear or change.

- If the buffer breaksDrop the café or switch to taxi
RESERVATION & BOARDING
Intercity, express and airport buses
Confirm the terminal, not only the city
A city can have multiple terminals and boarding points. Match the Korean terminal name on your ticket with the map before paying.
Keep the QR and pickup rule
Some routes accept a mobile QR at the gate; others require a printed ticket or counter check. Read the boarding instruction shown with the reservation.
Airport limousine is a separate rule
Airport Limousine states that passengers from Incheon Airport to downtown should buy a ticket at the nearby counter or vending machine. Do not treat it like an ordinary city bus.
